Big Strategy Board Games
Board Games that'll make you think and give your brain a workout!
Brass is one of those titles I feel like I'm playing for the first time every time I play. And that's entirely my own doing because I keep intimidating myself out of playing it. And the truth is Brass isn't a difficult economic game, it makes a lot of sense. Strategies however do require time and effort. Hence why I'm still stuck on my first game. This is so fun but I need to play it more to appreciate it more!
It's been a delight getting Russian Railroads back on the table via the new Ultimate Railroads version. The box may be massive but I love how much thought went into its organisation. And the game itself remains a lovely mix of simplicity and great design, pushing your tracks along to unlock victory!
Ark Nova 1-4 Economic Ark Nova feels like a bunch of different games I've played before. But that isn't to its detriment! This is a very fun and thinky game about running a zoo where you're trying to be efficient with your actions. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to go back for more!
Terra Mystica 2-5 Players Civilization Game It's been so long since I pulled down Terra Mystica and I'd forgotten about all the odd colour choices! I still love playing as a people, building my cities and making sure I've enough action cubes and shovels to get it all done. Really I should pick up an expansion!
Messina 1347 2-4 Players Worker Placement Messina 1347 has lots going on because defending your town from the plague is hard work! It's a fun action selection game with many paths to victory and after two plays I feel like I've barely scratched the surface. And watch out for the rats!
Factory 42 2-5 Players Worker Placement Game Factory 42 continues to be one of the most thematic games I've played. In it you are a factory overseer, jointly trying to meet quotas. And yes it's worker placement! It's a lot to take in initially (not helped by some of the graphic design choices) but it's a great illustration of theme meets mechanics for a euro game
Messina 1347 1-4 Players Strategy Game Messina 1347 may be about the plague but it's nothing to be running from. This is a rather fun game about saving people through quarantine (and hard work), burning away the disease and sending them back to town. Mostly you do things to trigger other things but I found it very pleasant!
Food Chain Magnate 1-5 Players Heavy Economic Game Ever wanted to try running your own restaurant? Create your company structure, hire and train employees, advertise your wares so you can make food and sell it for profit! It's a heavy game to wrap your head around but very fun to play
