Millard describes the literacy gap between boys and girls when she says "boys have lesser enthusiasm than girls for reading,"(p. 1). Through the course of the semester I learned that boys have more of a liking to hands on skills such as building, and experimenting, which has helped explain the gap. Some solutions I learned was to allow the students to choose their own reading materials. By doing this, the students have more of an interest in reading, which helps to improve their overall literacy. Another aspect that I found to be important from our semester readings was that of student centered learning. This form of learning takes the instruction from the teacher and gives more of the power to the student. It allows students to take part in decision making and collaboration. It allows the teacher to look at students particular views, values, and beliefs, and engage them in those areas. Teaching, Ideas, Education, Student Centered Learning, Student Center, Decision Making

Probably one of my favorite forms of literacy development that I learned in this class was the use of technology in the classrooms. The readings proved that teachers who have came to terms with the 21st century, can implement technology in ways that spark an interest for learning in their students. Using tablets, social media, and various internet applications, can enhance the learning process and literacy of students due to the many collaboration methods these things offer. Literacy is truly the key to success in this world. In order to be an intelligent functioning member of society, one must have literacy and all the skills it entails. A person must also be always willing to improve on it and help others improve as well. A literacy key to success is a key in which is open to new ideas, hones in on what you think/believe, has a voice, makes connections, empowers, teaches, thinks critically and analytically, and has an academic language of power. Freire tells us that, "Provided with the proper tools for such encounter, the individual can gradually perceive personal and social reality as well as the contradictions in it, become conscious of his or her own perception of that reality, and deal critically with it." (P. 32) He teaches us to think outside the box, to not conform. By speaking our mind and being able to think critically about the things we say and about what happens around us, ultimately gives us power in the world. Giroux states that students, "deserve an education that acknowledges its role in the preparation of critical political subjects, that prepares them to become agents capable of locating themselves in history while simultaneously shaping it" (p. 10). This is where the power of literacy comes into play. It is our jobs as current and future teachers to prepare today's youth to be able to think critically and ask questions. We have to teach students how to analyze not just their own thoughts, but the thoughts and words of others; in order for them to be productive thinking members of society. Teachers can't simply just add students to the herd, we must create leaders of the future. Play, Learners, Change The World, Literacy Rate

Lankshear and Knobel describe digital literacy and 21st century teaching as a "‘special kind of mindset or thinking’ – a substantive way of being literate in the sense of engaging with meanings within intensified digital environments – and the latter typically involves sets of skills, tasks and performances seen as necessary for technical proficiency with digital tools," (p. 22). The importance for teachers to conform to this new age technology is significant. Classrooms are turning into to primarily digital based classrooms and are therefore becoming more interactive for students. This alone has created a huge stepping stone in the achievement of academic literacy. This is because students can interact with each other and the teacher in and outside of the classroom. They now have information at their finger tips, which helps to enhance in class critical and analytical thinking. Throughout the semesters readings, I learned about the importance of multicultural literacy. A teacher can enhance the learning enviorment of the classroom by bringing in literature from a variety of different backgrounds and cultures. This allows the students to be able to connect to literacy in ways they otherwise wouldn't have. By doing this, the students can connect what they are reading to real world events, or to personal events within theirs lives. This then sparks an interest, and love f Student Activities, Literature, Preschool Literacy, School Age, Students, Book Activities

Gee describes discourse as "a socially accepted association among ways of using language, of thinking, and acting, that can be used to identify oneself as a member of a socially meaningful group or social network," (p. 51). A discourse helps shape a persons literacy in many different ways. For example if you come from a family who puts importance on education, your parents are more likely to start teaching you at a higher level of literacy than that of another family. That is what creates a discourse. Gee describes it as a type of identity kit that comes complete with an instruction book and costume. This discourse tells one how to talk and act and if you come from a family where education is important, the way you talk and act is going to be more academic, than others outside your discourse. Gee and Hayes explain passionate affinity spaces as "when people organize themselves in the real world and/or via Internet to learn something connected to a shared endeavor, interest or passion," (p. 69). Social media deems to be a huge form of a passionate affinity space. For example, when using Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, a person can use hashtags such as #literacy, and attach them to particular posts that contain information beneficial to the #literacy. Smagorinsky talks about Vygotsky's idea that writing is a meditational tool and explains that the "written language consists of a system of signs arbitrarily forming sounds and words of oral speech that in turn are signs for real objects and relations,"(p. 165). This is when it becomes evident that literacy is a lot more that just reading and writing and that one can not simply teach others to write in a way that is just "making" words on a page. Writing and reading together play hand in hand. They both require an immense amount of critical thinking and analytical skills essential to the development of ones literacy. Therefore teachers must teach reading and writing accordingly by asking open ended questions and allowing students to engage and interact with each other and as a class. Allowing learning to go from student to teacher and teacher to student is a huge aspect of this. Summer, Critical Thinking Skills, Reading Writing, Teaching Reading, Inquiry Learning

Durning this course I learned the importance of oral language through the use of reading and writing in literacy. Being able to take words from a page and transform them into the oral form is a huge aspect in obtaining academic literacy. This is because it creates Room in a learners brain to focus on analysis. Literacy is a tool that helps shape a persons life and is something that can never be taken away from you. Literacy is a way of learning that allows a person to keep learning and that also allows a person to help others learn as well. It is a powerful changing tool in a forever changing society, and we as learners must always strive to better our literacy as a person, and as a society altogether. Duncan-Andrade and Morrell explain "We believed that, to the extent that students were exposed to literature of other times and places, they would begin to make connections to their own everyday experiences while gaining an understanding of similarities across time and cultures," (p. 52). I think this is an important aspect to Acedmic literacy. If teachers incorporate different types of literature that touches on the many cultural backgrounds of the students, they are then able to make real life Novels, Vida, Parole, Aventura, Literatura, Blog, Tips

I think this picture really helps to encompass what learning literacy is all about. As a teacher, one must realize that because you teach a student how to do one thing does not mean they will be able to do the next. Literacy requires teaching in a way that hits on all aspects of literary development. You can not just teach your students how to listen and regurgitate, you must teacher them how to critically and analytically think in different forms. Which includes, reading, writing, speaking, listening etc. Cartoon, English, Technology, Punch, Tech, Science And Technology, Punch Magazine, Computer Literacy, Research Paper
