The Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park rise without warning from the harsh Texas borderlands. No other mountains in the continental USA dare extend so far south, so deeply into the Chihuahuan Desert. Few other Texas peaks so boldly pierce the sky. Some say the name “Chisos” comes from a Native American word for
Driving to Marfa
In a region remote, we live in the center of things: twenty-five minutes and we’re in bustling Fort Davis, population 1,200. Forty-five minutes gets us to the “big towns” of Alpine with its 5000 folks, give or take, or Marfa, with seventeen hundred-odd souls (some odder than others). Each Far West Texas community offer

Summer Softens the Texas Mountains (and a Young Artist's Hardened Heart) Lindy Cook Severns Art
Few people know Texas has mountains. Many don’t appreciate their fearful beauty. Savoring Texas mountains is an acquired taste, and those who befriend these wild, high desert peaks don't take them for granted. I paint the Davis Mts with the awe I feel when summer softens life's hard edges in West Texas ranch country.

Fort Davis started before the Civil War as an army outpost. Today the fort is a National Historic Site, open daily for self-guided walking tours. Much of the ruins have been left in their original state, while a significant number of buildings have been meticulously restored. Hiking trails lead from the fort up to the top of the mountain to join with the Davis Mt State Park.
