Stone Overlook at Davis Mountains State Park. The CCC built Indian Lodge and a series of picturesque stone structures that look down on Fort Davis. Most are accessible by driving the park's scenic roads.

Fort Davis started before the Civil War as an army outpost. Today the fort is a National Historic Site, open daily for self-guided walking tours. Much of the ruins have been left in their original state, while a significant number of buildings have been meticulously restored. Hiking trails lead from the fort up to the top of the mountain to join with the Davis Mt State Park.

Courtyard at Los Jalepenos, Alpine Texas This small, casual Murphy Street restaurant offers authentic Mexican food and Tex Mex. We love eating in the courtyard. (Try the fajita trio of shrimp, chicken and steak!)

Cibolo Creek Ranch was established about 1857 by Milton Favre. Legend says that by the time the other settlers arrived in the region, he'd established a huge herd of cattle and a private presidio (fort). Today the renovated ranch is a luxurious private resort.

Lajitas Resort may not have the rustic charm it once sported, but its a nice place on the Rio Grande. We like the deli at the general store; you don't have to stay there to dine at the restaurant, with its spectacular view, or enjoy the bar and landscaped courtyard.

The Starlight Theatre, Terlingua Ghost Town Texas isn't fancy, and it isn't inexpensive but the food is great and there's no shortage of atmosphere. Sit on the porch and watch the sunset reflected onto the Chisos Mts before you dine. Entertainment of some sort almost nightly.
