I would use this hand out as a viewing activity. For older kids I would put a blank beside the examples and provide a word bank. With younger and even older kids I would bring in materials and examples of these textures represented so they can get a real experience with it.

Arbor Day Activity: Bark Rubbings - The Seasoned Mom

Today we enjoyed another Arbor Day Activity: Bark Rubbings! Isn’t it a childhood rite of passage to make bark rubbings at some point? For the Love of Art

For this project, I read the story Rainbow Fish and we discussed the moral of the story. The first day we created our oceanic background. We used cake tempera in blues, greens, and purples making puddles of color all over the page. Then we sprinkled on a little salt to get a sea salty look. Once dry, we drew in some seaweed. For the fish, I did a step by step drawing on my marker board and had the kids follow. All fish turned out so different, which I love! We used watercolor pencils first…

* Easy Fall Kid Craft: Sandpaper and Crayon Leaves

Good morning and happy Monday everyone! It's cloudy and cool here this morning, but we had some beautiful October weather all weekend. Now if we could just get over our fall cold's we could really have some fun! We're sniffling and hacking but we're still crafting! The girls and I decided to make some sandpaper leaves to decorate the playroom windows. (Pardon their Pajamas in the photos, that's how we roll around here.) This project is great for preschoolers (ages 2-3) on up! You will need…

Poppy Mixed Media

Well this is the Remembrance Day project I have come up with for this year "Mixed Media Poppies". Tape off your watercolor or white sketch paper for that nice finished edge and then paint in your background color with disc tempera. While the paint is still wet cover with a layer of plastic wrap and smoosh it slightly. Leave in place until dry. While your background is drying work on your poppy papers. You want a few types. In this one I'm using thicker liquid tempera and patting it in with…

Texture Sandwiches

I got this lesson from http://kidsartists.blogspot.com and just had to make them with my 5th graders! The main focuss was on texture. I put out boxes of stuff and the kids had a great time stacking their sandwich items. First, we made the table cloth and plate. Next, we added the bun which is made from torn up cardboard, so that the ridges show. Then they had to fill the space between the buns! The kids had to be reminded that the items had to look like a food item. They couldn't just glue…
