Frustrated at the pace of political reform some 340 volunteers and 47 ICA members, led by Connolly and Pearse, stormed the GPO, read the Proclamation while 118 ICA took over the Royal College of Surgeons and 43 to Dublin Castle. The Easter Rebellion lasted less than a week and fifteen of the leaders, including Connolly, were executed and public opinion was revolted.
