A painting of Boki (sometimes Poki, born Kamā‘ule‘ule) (before 1785–after December 1829) was a High Chief in the ancient Hawaiian tradition and served the Kingdom of Hawai‘i as royal governor of the island of O‘ahu. Boki ran a mercantile.  Also pictured is his wife Kuini Liliha  (c. 1802–1839) a High Chiefess in the ancient Hawaiian tradition who served the Kingdom of Hawai‘i as royal governor of O‘ahu. She administered the island from 1829 to 1831 following the death of her husband.

October 29, 1889: Japanese immigrant and labor advocate Katsu Goto is lynched by men employed by the owner of the Ookala Plantation in Hawaii. After working for three years as a contract laborer on a plantation, Goto opened up a general store in competition with the local company store and served as a liaison between Japanese laborers and plantation management, facilitating mediation, acting as an interpreter, and advocating for improved working conditions.
