This photograph is one of those taken by John Cooke in 1913 to illustrate the dreadful living conditions in Dublin. Engine Alley still exists and is located in the Liberties area of Dublin. Note the broken glass and ragged curtains in the windows. Old Pictures, Old Photos, Vintage Photos, Dublin Ireland, Ireland Travel, Irish Eyes Are Smiling, England, Thats The Way, World History

The modernistic and simplistic approach on the packaging was a process that took various refinements until it felt authentic […]

Michael's Lane, Dublin City

Today we go from the grandeur of the Great Northern Hotel to inner city Dublin with plenty of life and points of interest to ponder. Is that a "Fagins" of urchins on the left foreground? What do you call a group of urchins? Apart from what to call the gaggle/huddle of "urban youth" on the left, with thanks especially to Niall McAuley, swordscookie, sharon.corbet, pellethepoet, O Mac and others, we learned a lot about Michael's Lane close to Christ Church in Dublin. We learned that this image…

In the fascinating pictures a group of boys play on a barge on a Dublin canal, a group of men enjoy pints of stout at a pub, and a fishing trawler returns to the shore of Fingal with fresh supplies. Ging's of Dame Street

Ging's, a well-known theatrical costumier and fancy dress suppliers on Dame Street in Dublin. The closed down shop of Maurice Abrahams, Master Bespoke Tailor, is festooned with posters for Zero's Disco which also adorned our Upper Ormond Quay pissoir in another Michael S. Walker photo from 1973. Thanks to Slow Loose Chippings for letting us know that "Zero's Disco was in Wolfe Tone St. "Brush" Sheils used to play there, amongst others!" Here's the current Street View. Thanks to Niall McAuley…

Nuns passing demolition at Dorset Street on the Northside during summer 1964

Nuns passing demolition, Dublin

A more modern shot with many signals of times past! The makeshift hoarding versus todays mandatory fencing and most of all those nuns with those enormous headpieces on display. With thanks to O Mac and sharon.corbet we know that this was likely a shot of the much debated demolition works at Dorset Street on the northside during the summer of 1964.
