One of these days I'll crochet an afghan using the African Flower / Paperweight Granny motif-- and when I do, I'll definitely use the join-as-you-go method-- so much easier for joining hexagons! (Really, any non-square motif. Works for squares, too, but squares aren't much trouble to join afterwards, either.)
