Empress Eugénie’s Locket, Circa 1860. Gold oval locket, set with a sapphire cameo of a Muse with lyre, framed in diamonds, within a diamond and pearl laurel wreath. Inside is a glazed compartment with a photograph of the Empress. The locket is attached by a gold double E cipher surmounted by the Napoleonic Imperial crown. This historic locket was a gift from the Empress to Lady Burgoyne in thanks for enabling her to flee France for England on her yacht after the fall of the Second Empire.

The holder hinges open to reveal side-by-side slots for nickels and dimes. The coins slide under a metal lip and rest on a spring loaded base. There is room for two of each coins. A wonderful and very unusual compartment locket from the 1950's era! This beautiful locket has the shape of a 4-leaf clover which is formed by 4 individual hearts. Made of 14kt yellow gold, each of the heart faces open to reveal a small compartment. The surface of each has a simple etched design and 3 vibrant rubies which are set within a small starburst design.

This locket is just plain feminine and sweet, no two ways about it. It has a lovely repousse (raised) floral design around the border on the front and the back, and etching in the center in the front. It is in great condition with just a few light scratches, tarnish and just a little darkening of the gold due to its age. It opens and closes well and securely.
