Pine Island has a long history dating back thousands of years ago. The first people to live on the island were the Calusa Indians, who settled here sometime around 500 AD. The Calusa were a powerful and respected tribe that controlled much of southwest Florida. They built large shell mounds, which can still be seen on Pine Island today.
