Today's artwork takes us to the 15th Century Dysert O'Dea Castle near the village of Corofin in County Clare. The stronghold of the O'Dea (O'Day) Clan was built in 1490 and is surrounded by fascinating historic sites. Over the course of its history, the castle changed hands several times. The Earl of Ormond’s troops removed the O’Dea clan in 1570, but only temporarily — the O’Deas reclaimed their fort in 1584. Allegiances ebbed and flowed in subsequent centuries, leading to more sieges and cha
Rows of turf (peat) lay drying in the sunlight at a bog in County Clare. In the old days, each of these thousands of pieces would have been cut by hand using a double-sided spade called a sleán. . Each piece needs to be turned to help with the drying process, and ultimately pieces are stood on end (called footing) to finish drying out. . Many homes till use turf for heating in winter, though the practice is slowly disapp
