George Martin, Producer and Arranger for The Beatles, Dies at 90
Beatles producer George Martin dies at 90. George Martin, the “Fifth Beatle” and British treasure who signed the Fab Four to a label contract when no one else would, produced virtually all their songs and introduced lavish arrangements into “Yesterday” and “A Day in the Life,” has died. He was 90.
Sir George Martin is often referred to as "the Fifth Beatle" in reference to his extensive involvement on all the Beatles' original albums as EMI in-house record producer. He attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama studying piano and oboe. He then worked for the BBC's classical music department and joined EMI in 1950. He is considered one of the greatest record producers of all time, with 30 number one hit singles in the UK and 23 number one hits in the US.
