late 1500s Separate wooden picture frames were used in Italy from about the 15th century although they developed from earlier frames in both metal and wood on altarpieces. They were used to protect and enhance both secular and religious paintings. As well as many picture frames acquired with paintings, the V&A acquired some frames - principally Italian renaissance in origin or style - as independent objects. They were usually chosen for the fine quality of their carving and decorative effects. Italian mirror frame, c. 1530. "An inscription warning against vanity, "Not beauty but truth is to be admired," appears in the cartouche below two griffins at the bottom edge of this carved frame that originally housed a mirror. The mirror would have been covered with a sliding shutter (now lost). The style of the frame and the quality of its craftsmanship suggest that this was made in the del Tasso workshop in Florence, which for 3 generations was famous for its woodcarving." - Met website.
