Inference Activities

Hi Everyone! Happy 3 Day weekend! :) This will be a quick post... I will be diving into inferencing next week. (although I've dabbled in it here and there) I LOVE to start with this book: It is quite a simple read with MANY opportunities for the children to use their inferring skills. I first start off by reading it orally and talking about what inference really means- Use the text clues + Use what I know (schema) = Inference The kids catch on pretty quickly! Then on the second day we use an…

Teaching Inferring Reading Skills with Picture of the Day

What do you observe in this picture? What details do you notice? What do see when observing it "closely"? What inferences can you make based on what you see in this picture? These are just a few of the questions that get kids thinking about some of the answers to many of the questions we ask them during close readings of a text. Picture of the Day is an inferring strategy I started with... Photo courtesy of Barbara Saia of Happy Go Smile ... students last year to increase their reading…

Inferring-What's in the Bag?

What's in Mrs. Q's bag?

While trolling Pinterest recently, I found a great lesson on inferring (our reading comprehension strategy focus for two weeks) that I just had to try. The original lesson can be found here. Basically, students try to infer something about you, the teacher, as you pull items out of your teacher-bag! My kids absolutely loved it and were able to make simple, but meaningful, inferences. It was really funny to hear their responses. Here is the anchor chart we created together: Students chose 2…

Gingerbread Man story comparison

Gingerbread Delight!

We had a fun-filled week full of gingerbread activities. If you have not purchased Deanna Jump's GIngerbread Unit, DO IT!! It is full of amazing activities! She has some freebies on her blog too. So we started out by making our gingerbread journals. I followed Deanna's steps to make the gingerbread man, but for the booklet, I just folded a large piece of construction paper in half, stapled our activity pages inside, and rounded the top corners. It was so easy to make and a lot less cutting…
