Potent Catholic nationalism prompted the Home Rule Act of 1914, and led to the Easter rising of 1916 after which Sinn Fein became radicalised under Arthur Griffith and Eamon de Valera and the IRA was expanded under Michael Collins. This is Paul (or perhaps James) Hetherington, an officer in the National Army during the Irish Civil War. Any help with rank would be welcome, as our metadata gives Compt. - presumably should be Commdt.? While in another photo taken on the same day, he's referred to as Capt.
