Dunbrody Abbey, built in 1210 (Hook Peninsula, Co. Wexford)
Hook Lighthouse, Ireland; William Marshal, a Knights Templar, known as the Greatest Knight, built the lighthouse tower to protect and develop the shipping trade, which was so important in the 13th century. Monks looked after the lighthouse tower until 1641. Lightkeepers and their families lived at the lighthouse until 1977. Standing tall on the tip of the Hook Peninsula is the world’s oldest intact operational lighthouse, Hook Lighthouse. Monks would heave sacks of coal up the 115 steps to keep the black and white beacon lit to warn sailors of possible shipwreck.
