THE IRISH FREE STATE was formed in 1922 from 26 counties of the four provinces that made up the island. Six of the counties of Ulster province remained as part of the United Kingdom. In Ulster Scots they are called NORLIN AIRLANN. The south is a separate country...the Republic.
