Novel solar cells split water to generate fuel
Renewable energy researchers have long dreamed of using the energy in sunlight to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen could then either be burned as a fuel or piped through a fuel cell to generate electricity any time it’s needed. Silicon solar cells can do the job, but only when several are wired together, because individual silicon solar cells don’t produce a voltage high enough to split water by themselves. That kills the economics of doing this on a large scale.

Solar In-depth: From Sun To Nanoparticles To Electricity
The solar in-depth section dives into the fundamentals of producing electricity from the suns rays. We have tried to make this as understandable as possible for a person with no physics background while portraying an accurate picture of the real physical phenomenon. The discussion ranges from the radiation of the sun, to how solar cells work, to the different kinds of solar cells, and the pros and cons of each plus some laboratory advances
Semitransparent perovskite solar cells with graphene electrodes
A researcher at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HK PolyU) has developed the first-ever made semitransparent perovskite solar cells with graphene as electrode. With simple processing techniques, solar cells with high power conversion efficiencies can be fabricated at low cost.
Solar Cell Efficiency Jumps 50% With Perovskite Layer
Stanford researchers jack up solar cell efficiency with the help of a "temporary tattoo," in a new tandem solar cell made from silicon and perovskite.
Perovskites: The next PV revolution? | Solar Choice
Perovskites have taken the PV research world by storm in recent years thanks to unprecedented growth in efficiency in the material. Perovskite solar cell efficiencies have gone from a barely [...]Read more
Perovskite solar cells hit new world efficiency record
They're flexible, cheap to produce and simple to make - which is why perovskites are the hottest new material in solar cell design. And now, engineers at Australia's University of New South Wales in Sydney have smashed the trendy new compound's world efficiency record.
Tandem silicon-perovskite solar cells could provide solar power on the cheap
By combining silicon solar cells with their cheap and efficient perovskite-based counterparts, researchers at Stanford and MIT are creating a new type of "tandem cell" that could reach efficiencies up to 35 percent.
Researchers use liquid inks to create better solar cells
(Phys.org) —The basic function of solar cells is to harvest sunlight and turn it into electricity. Thus, it is critically important that the film that collects the light on the surface of the cell is designed for the best energy absorption. The quest to develop more efficient solar cells has resulted in a fierce competition among scientists to find the lowest cost and highest energy materials.
Molecular Soccer Ball" Perovskite Solar Cell Gets 20.5%
A new perovskite solar cell combines tandem architecture, low cost materials and energy efficient, low cost thin film solar cell manufacturing.
