‘Dublin’ by John Harvey, 1949.

I'm a big fan of books on Dublin from decades gone by, in particular guide books or studies written by 'outsiders'. John Harvey's Dublin: A Study In Environment (1949) was begging me to buy it when I spotted it sitting in Chapters second hand section, and I couldn't resist. The book comes with the endorsement…

A World Under Glass

Explore on 26th November '08. (Highest @ #68) Stephens Green Shoppng Centre, Dublin, is one of central Dublins main shopping centres. It was opened in 1988 on the site of an earlier market, the Dandelion market (where U2 played some of their earliest concerts). The centre is located at the top of Dublins main shopping street, Grafton Street, and opposite St. Stephens Green (a city-centre park). Though it's only twenty years old, I think the iron and glass construction gives it an…

Nun of that: A woman in religious habit walks along O'Connell Street in Dublin with a woman wearing a yellow dress, while a man carries a ladder and another woman holds an umbrella while a man cycles by, in a scene captured in June 1963 Dublin Street, Dublin City, Old Pictures, Old Photos, Irish Free State, Irish Eyes, Colour Images, 1960s, The Past

O'Connell Street, Dublin

Photographer Richard Tilbrook captured a fine array of pedestrians in this shot - "ordinary" women; a nun; a schoolboy; a window cleaner; and a cyclist. Also in evidence is the haphazard parking down the middle of O'Connell Street that would give a modern traffic warden pause for thought. Signage for the Confectioner's Hall (second frontage from the left) is still there today, and think that may be Cafolla's Italian Chippers next door... Date: June 1963 NLI Ref.: TIL853
