Pablo Picasso Collages Inspire Kids to Explore Identity With Self-Portraits

Create Picasso collages inspired by the famous artist who co-founded Cubism. A great way for kids to explore identity through this self-portrait activity. Project & post by Catalina Gutierrez of Redviolet Studio. What is it about Picasso’s art that makes it so attractive to children (as well as adults, of course)? Maybe it is his amazing ability to create works in so many different styles? Or maybe the colors and the “crazy shapes” (in words of my first graders) he used in his art works?…

Analagous Color Pumpkins at Night

Ok! So I'm super excited about how these are turning out. The first day the kids were working was the day of drawing from observation. I collected tons of different gourds, and some pictures as well, so that they would begin to notice just how many different colors, sizes, and textures are possible. Students were encouraged to draw their pumpkins and gourds overlapping. Once done with drawing, we used clear Elmer's gel glue to outline the drawings. They dried beautifully, with nice, dark…

Kindergarten Abstract Alphabet Painting

This project is completely and totally AMAZING and fun!!! It was a perfect way to wrap up the school year with my Kindergartners, whom I adore each year. The inspiration for this project came from the blog, Olive ART! Do You??? To begin, we discussed letters/words in art and looked at some reproductions by Stuart Davis. Then I asked students to paint any letters using white paint onto 12 x 18 black paper. We used smaller brushes and I encouraged a variety of sizes for making the letters…

5th Grade: Pop Art Prints

For this project, I showed a powerpoint on Pop Art and Andy Warhol's famous prints. We defined what popular culture was in his day and what it is now. Students brainstormed a pop culture object that would best represent them and drew it on a sheet of small paper 4 1/2" x 6". Then they placed a styrofoam printing plate under their pencil drawing and traced over it again so it would carve into the foam. Once their drawing was transferred and carved deep enough, they cut it out and we began to…

5th Grade: Fall Leaves & Wind Matisse Collage

5th graders finally finished their fall collages, just in time for winter! I will be starting this same project with a couple classes that are behind next week, and we will be using cool colors and cut-paper snowflakes instead of leaves. This can really be done for any season! First, we looked at a a powerpoint about Matisse and his cut outs, and discussed geometric and organic shapes. After the powerpoint, students filled one whole page in their sketch books with organic shapes, and one…
