Marie Curie (1867-1934) discovered polonium and radium, which led to her extensive radioactivity research and has provided generations of scientists and doctors a fighting chance against cancer. Curie is the only person ever to win a Nobel Prize in two sciences (she won in chemistry and physics.) She also was the first female professor at the University of Paris and the first woman entombed in the Pantheon in Paris courtesy of her life's dedicated work.
Pierre Curie’s self-inflicted severe skin reaction after a deliberate application of a radium source on the forearm (courtesy of Museum Marii Sklodowskief-Curie, Warsaw). Zimmern mentioned (in Ref. p. 362) having previously tried this kind of experiment by carrying a radium source on his arm for 20 days but failed to observe any reaction because of the low activity of the source.

'I fitted up, with the help of the Red Cross, a radiologic car. It was simply a touring motor-car, arranged for the transport of a complete radiologic apparatus, together with a dynamo that was worked by the engine of the car, and furnished the electric current necessary for the production of the rays.' Marie Curie and the Science of Radioactivity
When Curie learned that Einstein, like her, had been appointed to the League's Commission on Intellectual Cooperation, she sent a letter urging him to serve: “I believe your acceptance, as well as mine, is necessary if we have any hope of rendering any real service.”
