In the 1830s, the United States government forced the people of the Choctaw Nation to leave their homeland in the area of Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana, and to walk 500 miles to Indian territory, which later became Oklahoma. Chamberlain and the 20th Maine Gettysburg, 1st July 1863. By vocation he was a professor, not a soldier. Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain had volunteered for the army, however, and he was a natural leader. He and his regiment – the 20th Maine Infantry – had endured a bloody baptism of fire at Fredericksburg, and at Gettysbury they defended a crucial sector of the Union line. “hold at all hazards,” they were commanded — and they did.
