Chamberlain and the 20th Maine Gettysburg, 1st July 1863. By vocation he was a professor, not a soldier. Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain had volunteered for the army, however, and he was a natural leader. He and his regiment – the 20th Maine Infantry – had endured a bloody baptism of fire at Fredericksburg, and at Gettysbury they defended a crucial sector of the Union line. “hold at all hazards,” they were commanded — and they did.
