Harriet E. Wilson 1825 –1900) is the first female African-American novelist. Her novel Our Nig, or Sketches from the Life of a Free Black was published in 1859 in Boston, M.A. Born a free person of color in Milford, N.H. Wilson wrote one novel. She had her own school, her own hair dressing ointment business and was paid on the public speaking circuit for her lectures about her life. Sculptor, Fern Cunningham of Boston.
