Pericardial tamponade occurs when fluid builds in the pericardial sac causing collapse of the right ventricle. Relative contraindications include coagulopathy, previous thoracoabdominal surgery, pacemakers, prosthetic heart valves and inability to visualize the effusion with ultrasound.
