Button Sewing

This week one of my returning students asked when I was going to put out our sewing table. I told her that it would definitely be out later this year. In my mind I was thinking that it's too early...

Do your children have equal shelf space? Otis and his materials are slowly taking over the study. Otis had his first hair cut and tried sewing cards for the first time. I realised that Otis does 'get' colour matching after all. Open and close activities are great for this age group. Vanilla extract and food colouring containers, little pencil cases or purses with zips are perfect for this.

Threading, lacing, sewing

Recently I started thinking about what activities have really worked for us and what haven't. I love threading, lacing and sewing activities but they have been a bit hit and miss at our house. This one (above) stayed on our shelves for over a year, yes a year! I first set it up when my son was around eighteen months old and it was well used until he was around two and a half years old. Highly recommended. At various times I have set up and demonstrated the lacing shapes, threading beads and…

Heart Sewing

For a variation of a sewing activity we are using plastic sewing cards (found in the sewing/embroidery section of Michaels or Joanne's) I traced a heart (some pink, some purple) and pre-cut the yarn (in coordinating color) and attached it to the sewing card. The needle is stored in the little jar in the pink basket. This work has been fun for the last week as most kids can do it independently and you can see the pattern on both sides of the card! In the end I cut it out (if they'd like) for…

Sewing Drawers

I've really tried to focus on something unrelated to my Montessori life during this Christmas vacation - really, I have. The thing is, I can find something "Montessori" in just about anything! Such was the case when, in an attempt to clear my mind of all things Montessori-related, I revisited my old hobby of counted cross-stitching: Revisiting a favorite hobby - the beginnings of my latest endeavor... While enjoying the simple quietude of this pastime, it came to me... sewing drawers for the…

So, you want to sew?

Some of you may recall THIS post last summer about learning to thread a needle. The lesson has been on the shelf all year and has been enjoyed by a handful of my students. One reason I created the lesson was because I've always wanted to incorporate more sewing activities in the classroom, but threading a needle was always a challenge for the kids. Thanks to the practice the lesson provided, many of my students have been enjoying the following new sewing work: Using an embroidery hoop to sew…

Threading a Needle

I have a soft spot for Montessori's integration of sewing in the classroom and have always appreciated this Practical Life activity. The sewing sequence lessons are extremely helpful in promoting the direct and indirect aims of any and all Montessori lessons: Concentration, coordination, independence, and order (CCIO). In my classroom, however, I've encountered some obstacles while trying to introduce basic sewing lessons - either the child needs too much assistance and becomes…

FF- Lace Up Dolls

Road Trip? Rainy indoor day? Long flight? These fun lace up dolls are great for keeping little hands busy. It's a mix between a paper doll and a lace up card. Print on card stock, cut out on the solid line, laminate (I'd highly recommend this step), use a standard hole punch on the dotted circles and tie a shoe lace or string to the bottom of the girl only, then you can change her outfits by overlaying and lacing on her clothes. *make sure to cut out the white face on the princess doll so…
